Facebook

Should we allow students to access Facebook (or other social networking sites) from Library computers? What do you think?

The library seems to be turning into a glorified RGA/SS. Thus, if we are going to be making space for studying and more computers, and allowing people to check email why not allow them to Facebook? They pay a time penalty already: Facebook is very slow from the University during class hours. Further, instead of opposing the social networking craze why not exploit it? Start a 'Friends of the Library' group on Facebook, and give students ideas about finding study groups and organising their friends for study sessions at the bib/SS via the site. Often students sitting alone in their residence rooms end up watching episodes of populary series rather than studying.

I believe that all the computers in the library should be used for the sole purpose of academics and/or related fields and not for one's pleasure.

I find books generally a pleasure. And, happen to enjoy academics. Would I also be excluded from library computers?

I definitely agree with Anon No. 1. Students are moving into a new genre of communication, and banning facebook might just be stifling the natural way forward. If the US bandwidth can handle it, I don’t see why not. It might be imperative for social development amongst students and staff, and I think it has great potential in terms of groups etc that should be explored, rather than ignored.

This is the way communication in the 21st century is moving now. Libraries have to accpet that or else they will be left behind.
